With the school year getting over, we parents have some new challenges to tackle now. Summer activities!!!! It didn’t feel like school year-end, and we don’t know how the next school year will be. As we spent the last quarter of our school year homeschooling, the real challenge will be, how our kids cope up next grade level. To assure they are fully prepared, educational apps and sites are proving a great help.
I am listing some of the educational websites/apps which I have used at some point or the other and found them very interesting and educational while keeping kids busy.
Khan Academy One of the best sites available out there. They cover math science arts and whatnot. Very beautiful site, with no-nonsense material. Excellent place for all grades. It is FREE to subscribe.
PBS Learning Media Another FREE site that will help kids with Science experiments, math activities, and a lot of other fun videos. The advantage here is kids are already familiar with characters from PBS kids.
Epic Wonderful place to find thousands of books on different subjects! Best site to develop reading and research habits in kids. Most schools use this site/app and chances are kids already know about this. Hence continuity will make kids a little more comfortable in this changing environment.
It’s a subscription-based site. At many schools, teachers are sharing the class code with parents due to the current at-home learning situation. So, you might be able to access the site with a class code. But even if this is not the case, it’s worth the subscription.
Highlights Kids Yes! The magazine one. Very useful site for fun educational activities and games. It is free to subscribe to and quite engaging for kids.
Seussville Dr. Seuss is here to help!! A must-try site, with a bunch of cool stuff. Crafts, printables, recipes for kids, and much more! Again, FREE to subscribe and awesome content!
Brainpop a site that’s been used by many schools. They are offering FREE access to parents to help kids affected due to school closures. BrainPOP curriculums are designed for students K-12, but there’s also BrainPOP Jr., which is ideal for kids 0-3. Both feature lesson plans and activities for science, reading, writing, math, social studies, and health.
Starfall A place where any child can learn reading and mathematics through exploration. This site is used by many schools as we as homeschooling parents. Their printable worksheet section is super useful. A must-try site to help your kids to learn and practice different subjects. It is a FREE site.
Storyline online Kids storybooks read by Actors. The SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s Daytime Emmy®-nominated and award-winning children’s literacy website, streams videos featuring celebrated actors reading children’s books alongside creatively produced illustrations. Readers include Oprah Winfrey, Chris Pine, Kristen Bell, Rita Moreno, Viola Davis, Jaime Camil, Kevin Costner, Lily Tomlin, Sarah Silverman, Betty White, Wanda Sykes, and dozens more. Reading aloud to children has been shown to improve reading, writing, and communication skills, logical thinking, focus, and general academic aptitude, as well as inspire a lifelong love of reading. Teachers use Storyline Online in their classrooms.

Go noodle To keep kids physically active, this is the best app to use. Good Energy at Home is a FREE online resource that provides tons of ways for kids and families to be active, stay mindful, and keep on learning! They offer;
- Movement, yoga, and mindfulness videos
- Downloadable curricular activities
- Recommended off-screen home activities
BeanStalk They are providing interactive classes for kids ages 1.5- 6. Some classes are live, others are on-demand, but all classes are taught by experienced teachers. Each class designates the age group it’s designed for. It’s currently FREE due to Covid-19.
I have tried to shortlist the 10 most helpful sites /apps to the best of my knowledge. My effort was to list those sites which are useful as well as free for the subscription.
